Aggregator
A company or organization that represents many smaller electricity users and buys power on their behalf.
Bundled
An electricity account that receives its delivery and its supply from ConEd. Such users are not eligible for deregulation tax credits and must pay ConEd’s tariff rates.
Delivery
The process of getting electricity from a generator to the user, including maintenance of wires, substations and other important equipment. Everyone in New York City must pay ConEd for delivery.
Deregulation
The establishment of a competitive marketplace for electricity that allows customers to buy power from whomever they wish. New York State has been deregulated since 1999.
Electricity Provider
Sometimes called an ESCO or Electricity Services Company, these are the companies that compete to supply customers with electricity in a deregulated marketplace.
Energy broker
A company that facilitates transactions between buyers and sellers – in this case between electricity customers and electricity suppliers.
Indexed Contract
A method of determining monthly prices for electricity based on an existing benchmark such as ConEd’s tariff.
Meter Read Date
Literally the day a representative from ConEd comes to read your electricity meter. These days mark the beginning and end of monthly services periods.
MSC Discount Contract
A type of indexed contract that uses ConEd’s tariff as the benchmark. Sometimes called a guaranteed savings contract because the monthly electricity price is always lower than ConEd.
Supply
The actual electricity that makes your business run.
Tariff
A set of rates and regulations put out by a Utility (such as ConEd) that determines how much bundled customers pay for electricity.
Utility
The public company responsible for ensuring energy delivery and maintaining electrical equipment for a given area. ConEd has been New York City’s electric utility for over a hundred years.
